Why the mark scheme is the real syllabus
The specification says what might be asked. The mark scheme says what gets paid. They are not the same document, and only one of them is read by the person awarding your grade.
Every tutor here works with the mark scheme open. Here is why.
1. It shows the shape of an answer
Mark schemes are written as lists of creditable points. Read three and the structure of a good answer becomes obvious, even in an unfamiliar topic.
2. It reveals what is never asked
Specifications are broad; papers are narrow. Five years of schemes show which corners of the spec come up every year and which have not appeared since 2019.
3. It settles arguments
When a student insists an answer should have scored, the scheme decides. That is a more useful lesson than any amount of reassurance.
- Download the schemes for the last five years of your board
- Mark your own paper before anyone else sees it
- Note the phrases that appear again and again
- Keep a page of those phrases per subject
None of this replaces understanding the subject. It just stops understanding going unpaid.
